About DarkMarkets Research
An independent research initiative documenting the technical landscape of anonymous networks, privacy technologies and decentralised marketplace infrastructure.
Our Mission
DarkMarkets Research was established to provide accurate, technically rigorous information about anonymous network markets. We believe that informed users are safer users. Our goal is to cut through misinformation, scam directories and outdated information that puts users at risk.
The anonymous network ecosystem is constantly evolving. Markets appear and disappear. Security vulnerabilities are discovered and exploited. Law enforcement tactics change. Keeping up with this landscape requires systematic, ongoing research — which is what we provide.
What We Do
We monitor active markets for uptime, security posture and significant events. Our research team verifies onion addresses against PGP-signed canaries, tracks vendor counts and listing volumes, and analyses escrow systems for structural weaknesses.
Every market listed on this site has been independently verified. Our ratings are based on quantitative metrics: cryptographic verification of canaries, uptime measurements over rolling 30-day windows, escrow model analysis and incident history review.
We do not accept payment from markets for listings or improved placement. All rankings are based solely on our independent assessment criteria.
Methodology
Our security scores are calculated from a weighted rubric covering:
- Escrow architecture (25%) — multi-sig vs standard; exit-scam resistance
- Authentication security (20%) — 2FA type, session management, anti-phishing
- Payment privacy (20%) — XMR-only vs BTC-accepting; chain analysis exposure
- Operational transparency (15%) — canary frequency, incident disclosure, PGP
- Infrastructure resilience (10%) — uptime, DDoS mitigation, mirror availability
- Community trust signals (10%) — forum reputation, resolved dispute rate
Scores are recalculated quarterly or immediately following significant incidents.
Update Schedule
Market status (online/offline) is checked and updated weekly. Security scores are reviewed quarterly. Major events — market shutdowns, security incidents, significant policy changes — trigger immediate review and update.
Our last comprehensive review was conducted in October 2026. The next scheduled review is January 2027.
Editorial Independence
This site accepts no advertising, sponsorship or payment of any kind from the markets we review. We have no financial relationship with any marketplace operator. Our analysis is based solely on publicly observable technical evidence.
If you believe any information on this site is inaccurate, we welcome corrections. Reach us via the PGP-encrypted contact channel listed on Dread under the handle "DarkMarketsResearch".
